Firefight Operation Cactus (USA / PA)
As the Cold War spread to new theaters around the world, the US began to look for new allies. They were looking for strongmen and strong nations that could act as the shield and the sword against the increasing menace of communism.
When Cuba fell to Castro, the search was on for a new Latin American ally. The Republic of Val Verde was ideal. Seated on the west coast of South America, they were close enough to areas of concern in the south, but far enough from Cuba as to avoid a direct threat from Castro. There was a catch however, and this was the socialist Republican government that wanted to be an ally of Moscow... The government would have to to.
In 1963, the CIA began to recruit members of the Civil Guard and the military who were right leaning Nationalists. By early 1964, the Nationalist movement believed they were ready to seize power. Operation Cactus would be launched in July and see most of Val Verde fall easily to the Nationalist without bloodshed, but this would not be the case for the capitol. Nationalist soldiers and Republican loyalists would battle here for days. Thrown into this brutal little coup would be a group of foreign mercenaries, looking to make a quick buck and find a proper war to fight in
